Privacy Policy

Americans Against Language Barriers (“AALB”, “we”, “us”) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Chicago, Illinois (EIN 83-3016421). This policy explains what we collect when you use aalb.org and its subdomains, register for our medical interpreter training, pay tuition, apply to work with us, or take part in the program, and what we do with it. We collect only what we need to run the program and the site, and we never sell personal information.
1. What we collect, and when
When you reserve a seat or register interest
Your name, email address, phone number, the languages you speak, the class you chose, and whether you asked for text reminders. We also record that you agreed to the AALB Policies and Procedures, which version of that document you agreed to, and the time, because that agreement is the basis of your enrollment.
When you start registering and do not finish
The registration form saves what you have typed as you complete each field, before you press the button, so that we can reach you if something went wrong or you meant to come back. That means a name, an email address, a phone number, the languages you chose and the class you were looking at can be stored even though you never submitted the form.
You have not agreed to anything at that point, and we treat it that way. We use it to follow up about the registration you started and nothing else. It is never added to a mailing list, never sold and never shared. Ask us and we will delete it, the same as anything else on this page.
When you pay tuition
Payments are processed by Stripe. Your card number is entered into Stripe’s secure form and never reaches our servers. From Stripe we receive the status of your payment, the amount, the plan you chose, your email address, and identifiers for the transaction. Before any payment is taken we keep a record of the terms you were shown and accepted: the text itself, the name on your registration, the plan, the time, your browser type, and a hashed form of your IP address.
When you browse the site
We set a small number of first-party cookies so we can understand how the site is used and which of our advertising brings students here:
aalb_vid, a random visitor identifier, kept for about two years.aalb_sid, a random session identifier, kept for 30 minutes and renewed while you browse.aalb_attr, the campaign details from the link you arrived on, set only when a link carries them and kept for 90 days._fbc, Meta’s click identifier, set only when you arrive from a Meta advertisement and kept for 90 days.
Alongside those we record page views, scrolling, clicks, the steps you take in the registration form, your screen size, the page that referred you, the page you landed on, your browser type, and the country your request came from. IP addresses are stored only as a one-way hash made with a secret value, so the stored hash cannot be turned back into your address. We use those hashes to limit abuse of our forms and as part of the record of a signed agreement.
When you apply to work with us
Your name, email address, phone number, your answers to the role’s questions, and anything you upload, such as a resume. If we invite you to a recorded video interview, we collect the video and audio of your answers, a short connection check, and the times you started and finished. Recordings are reviewed by our hiring team only.
During the program
The Policies and Procedures you agree to when you register describe these in full. To confirm your identity and that you are at least 18 when your certificate is issued, we ask for a valid form of identification, which is kept confidential and used only for that verification. Live classes are held on Zoom and are recorded to verify attendance. Final exams are proctored using your webcam and screen sharing. Your coursework, grades and attendance records are kept as part of your student record.
When you donate or buy continuing education
Donations and continuing education fees are taken on Givebutter’s own pages, under Givebutter’s privacy policy. Givebutter shares donor and purchaser details with us so we can issue receipts and acknowledge gifts.
When you contact us
Whatever you choose to tell us by email, phone or voicemail, and our replies.
2. How we use it
- To hold your seat, enroll you, run your class, and issue your certificate.
- To follow up on a registration you began and did not finish, in case you meant to come back or something went wrong.
- To contact you about your registration and your class by email and by phone, and by text message only if you asked for it.
- To take payment, keep accurate records of what you paid and what you agreed to, and collect balances that are owed.
- To answer your questions and requests.
- To keep the site working and secure, including limiting how often our forms can be submitted from one connection.
- To understand how people use the site so we can improve it.
- To measure which advertising brings students to us, as described in the next section.
- To consider your application if you apply to work with us.
- To meet our legal, tax and accounting obligations as a nonprofit.
3. Advertising measurement
We advertise the program, and we need to know which advertising works. When those tools are switched on, this site uses Google Analytics 4 and the Meta Pixel in your browser, and also reports two events to Google and Meta from our own server: that a registration was completed, and that a payment was confirmed by Stripe. Those server reports carry a hashed version of your email address and phone number so the platform can match the event to an advertisement, an event identifier so the same event is never counted twice, and the amount paid. They never carry your card details, your name in clear text, or your class.
Google and Meta use what they receive under their own privacy policies. You can limit this measurement with the cookie controls or an ad blocker in your browser, through your Google and Meta account settings, and by not opening links that carry campaign parameters. Our first-party records, which stay with us, are unaffected by those choices.
5. How long we keep it
An unfinished registration is kept while it is still worth following up and is deleted on request at any time. Registration, enrollment, payment and agreement records are kept for as long as we need them to run the program, support you as an alumnus, and meet our legal and accounting obligations, which can be several years after your class ends. Class recordings and exam proctoring records are kept for as long as they are needed to verify attendance and results. Job applications and interview recordings are kept for the hiring process and a reasonable period afterwards. Site usage data is kept for analysis and is not used to identify you by name.
6. How we protect it
The site is served only over HTTPS. Card details go directly to Stripe and are never stored by us. IP addresses are hashed with a secret before they are stored. Access to our records is limited to staff who need it and is protected by a password. No system is perfectly secure, so if you believe your information has been compromised, please contact us right away.
7. Your choices and rights
- You can ask us to show you, correct, or delete the personal information we hold about you through our contact form, or by post at the address below. We will honor requests wherever you live, except where we must keep a record to meet a legal obligation or to enforce an agreement, such as a payment plan.
- Text messages are sent only if you opted in. Reply STOP to any message, or email us, and they end.
- You can stop marketing email with the link in the message. We will still send you the emails your enrollment requires, such as your schedule and receipts.
- You can block or clear cookies in your browser at any time. The site works without them; only our understanding of how it is used suffers.
- We do not currently respond to browser Do Not Track signals.
8. Children
The training program is for adults. You must be at least 18 years old when your certificate is issued. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13 through this site. If you believe a child has given us information, contact us and we will delete it.
9. Changes to this policy
When we change this policy we will update the date at the top of this page. If a change materially affects how we use information you have already given us, we will tell you by email.
10. Contact
